Why This Blog Started & Shigesato Itoi

I want to shed some light on part of the inspiration for this blog. Why I started it more so than the content I've written about - I don't want to blame anyone else for that. Big video game fans, specifically fans of Japanese video games would recognise the title Earthbound (or its original Japanese title Mother 2 ). Earthbound is a Japanese roleplaying game (JRPG) that was released on 27th August 1994 in Japan and 5th June 1995 in North America on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). In Earthbound , the player controls a young boy and his group of friends on a mission to save the world in their little slice of Americana. Unlike many JRPGs, that are set in fantasy worlds or historical periods, Earthbound is set in a more modern setting in a fictional small town in America. Cha Chaan Teng

I had a delicious meal at a cha chaan teng today. This wasn't, as you would expect, in Hong Kong. It was actually in the Shoreditch area of London. Cha chaan tengs, for those unfamiliar, are cafes or diners found in Hong Kong and are a unique part of the city. The have that Hong Kong combination of Chinese and Western aesthetics and food - be it macaroni soup, french toast, or a plate of char siu and rice with sweet soy and scallions. It is also where you'll find the famous HK style milk tea - black Ceylon tea with condensed milk. Absolutely to die for when served cold. There are plenty of unique dishes and unique takes on other cuisines. One famous dish is the pineapple bun, which I'm sorry to tell you does not actually contain any pineapple, rather referring to the topping that resembles the fruit. Buying a Pipe as an Asthmatic Non-Smoker

I am afflicted with a curse. I am cursed with the shallow tendency to be attracted to the pure aesthetics of things around me. And to creating clunky sentences. Cars bore me half to death and I cannot say I exactly love driving them. Though if it looks cool or its design intrigues me then I am fully onboard. The engine or whatever it is I should actually be paying attention to doesn't factor into it. And so it is with my latest aesthetic interest - pipes. As a child I had a Sherlock Holmes style toy pipe and deerstalker hat as part of a halloween costume. This was possibly my first memory of what a pipe was. Its shape was unusual. It was fun to hold and to put in my mouth. Having that oversized plastic toy in my hand provided a feeling of being grownup and dignified as I paced around my bedroom with my pikachu blanket over my shoulders. I was jealous of Bart Simpson with his pipe that blew bubbles, I remember wanting it more than anything until I forgot about it after about a week...
