Jose Gonzalez is mesmerising. His guitar playing drives on forcefully yet with delicate touches throughout all while his unique voice soars in and out of each track.
This combination takes me back. Back to 2003, back to Hong Kong. In the backseat of my parents car driving at night. The red lights from the dashboard infront. The yellow street lights whizzing by the window and above the sunroof. This association has never fully left me and even his songs released after I had left Hong Kong still bring me there.
I saw Jose Gonzalez live today. Twenty years after his first album, Veneer, came out. He played the whole album to celebrate this anniversary - the most well known tracks being Heartbeats and Crosses.
Once he finished the album he played a number of covers and other album tracks. One that was both a cover and one of Gonzalez’s better known tracks he played this night was Teardrop (originally by Massive Attack). A beautiful poetic song and when done in his own style brings that musical combination that affects me so much.
It was a pleasure to share this with my partner. Although these feelings are personal to my own experiences I was glad to show her something that is a part of me.
I look forward to us finding new music and seeing new places. That we can then be transported at a future date and share a special feeling like this would be a dream.
