A Drive With Dad

 'What are you thinking about?'

'Nothing', came the automatic response. What was I even thinking about? Even if I could recall, doubt it would be riveting enough to be worthy of a mention. I realise this probably makes me sound quite cold to my father but he is used to it and I am sure he can see beyond it.

'Have you seen that video of Jeff Lynne on Youtube? He does this amazing acoustic set. It's just him singing with guitar and with his piano player.' As he slowed to a stop at the red light he grabbed a mint and popped it in his mouth.

'No, I haven't seen it.' I managed to get out the words through my tiredness.

'Have a look. I mean the guy is a total black hole of charisma but he's written some great songs and that acoustic set is great'

'I'll check it out.' That is my go to line to show that I am interested and will follow up on it. Confusingly it is also my go to line for when I want to reassure them that I am interested when I am not at all and have no intention whatsoever of checking it out. Based on my monotone vocal delivery & the seemingly all consuming energy it takes to make the effort to let out a word, it is certainly possible that my conversation partner assumes the latter. In actuality, more often than not it is the former.
